My AI Journey: From Executive Assistant to Business Owner

How AI helped an executive assistant reconnect with creativity, gain confidence, and build a business—without hype or fear.

AI JOURNEY

12/22/20253 min read

If you are—or you’ve ever been—an executive assistant, you know this truth well: the role is part strategy, part logistics, and part emotional intelligence. We manage chaos, translate vague ideas into action, and, to be brutally honest, we are sometimes punching bags.

We are not just good at what we do. We are great at what we do. We are the experts.

Executive assistants, virtual assistants, and administrative assistants have long created our own systems of efficiency through trial and error, research, tools, networking—and in recent years, through AI. Some companies do not allow AI tools in their environment due to intellectual property concerns, or their use is limited. In my opinion, virtual assistants are uniquely positioned to have more flexibility using AI to streamline systems, improve processes, and help their businesses grow.

This post isn’t about AI hype, productivity hacks, or how assistants should use AI. It’s about how learning to work with AI helped me reconnect with my creative side, clarify my thinking, and ultimately give myself permission to build something of my own.

Curious, Skeptical, and Cautious

I’ve always embraced change and technology—although there are plenty of things I don’t use to their full potential (I still use only minimal features on my phone). AI was no different. When I first used AI, it was very surface-level and general.

Grammarly has long been my trusted go-to for double-checking emails, newsletters, and content. I’ve used Copilot to help visualize ideas for my front-yard landscape. When I first started experimenting with AI tools more broadly, I honestly expected it to be nothing more than an amped-up Google search.

What surprised me most wasn’t that AI had answers—it was that it helped me ask better questions.

AI didn’t replace my thinking. It helped organize it. It gave me a place to start when my brain felt full. It helped me draft, refine, rethink, and sometimes just breathe through an overwhelming list of things to do.

What AI Actually Helped Me Do

AI helped me to:

  • Turn scattered thoughts into clear writing

  • Move past blank-page paralysis

  • Design with more intention

  • Build repeatable processes

  • Gain confidence in my ideas

  • Build a strong business from concept

Most importantly, it helped me see that the skills I’d been using for years as an assistant—communication, organization, and design thinking—were valuable beyond my job title.

From Supporting Others to Building My Own Business

At some point, the question shifted from “I can’t use AI at work, and I feel limited—how can I create my own path?” to “What else could this help me build?”

That question led to branding exercises. Service packages. Website copy. Client workflows. Things I never imagined doing for myself suddenly felt possible. That’s how Vine Virtual Solutions was born—not overnight, but through small, consistent steps made less intimidating with the help of AI.

What AI Didn’t Do

  • AI didn’t take my job.

  • It didn’t take away my voice or politely tell me something was “out of scope.”

  • It didn’t replace years of experience.

What it did was help me recognize the creativity and skills I knew I was capable of—but that had lived on the margins or were never a priority in my role. It created space for clarity, creativity, and confidence.

The human part still matters. It always will.

Why I’m Sharing This

I know there are other executive assistants, creatives, and quiet builders out there who feel capable but unseen—who have ideas but don’t know where to start or how to approach them.

If that’s you, I hope this reminds you that you don’t need to be technical, fearless, or perfectly ready. You just need curiosity. Ask the question. AI will answer.

This blog is part of me documenting the journey as it unfolds—what I’m learning, building, and refining along the way.
